Marie Mohr Obituary - 2023 (2024)

Marie Mohr; wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a woman loved by many, passed away in the presence of her loving children on January 31, 2023 under the compassionate care of Dr. Dalia Bushara and her staff at the Roblin District Health Centre at the age of 86.

Marie's parents, Herman and Maria Gottlieb who were devoted Christians, immigrated to Canada from Germany. Marie (which means God's love in German) was born December 9, 1936 on the homestead in Boggy Creek, MB in a log house. Marie was the second oldest. She had seven siblings: Theresa, Herman, Carl, Joseph, James, Alfred and David. She attended school for one year at Happy Lake school where her sister Theresa, who was only two years older drove them the three miles to school with horse and sleigh in the winter and by horseback in the summer. They moved to the Cromarty area in 1944 where Marie attended school in Roblin until grade 8. When her dad died at the young age of 46, Marie left school to help at home and did housework for the Schrader and Furtney families.

Ed Mohr, age 17 worked for Marie's parents as a hired hand assisting in building the big red barn. At the young age of 21 after Marie's dad died, he was running the farm and it was at this time, Marie watching Ed's dedication to farming knew she met the love of her life. They were married July 13, 1956. Later, they bought the Gottlieb farm and Marie said she never left home. They had a successful mixed grain farm where Marie enjoyed milking cows for the cream money, raising chickens and took great pride in her garden and beautiful flowers. They had five children: Marvin, Karen, Leann, Angela and Michael and were faithful members to St Matthews Lutheran church.

After her children were grown, she had her first retail job at Leann's Fashions for 10 years. She was passionate about maintaining Cromarty Hall. She was dedicated to getting donations and grants, and with the help of her neighbors they restored it into a heritage site.

Marie was known for her baking and canning. Never did her kids leave the farm without a cooler filled with goodies. Bread, buns, jam, pickles, noodles and perogies, were often shared with friends and neighbors. She took great pleasure in cooking delicious meals and liked to feed everyone. The kitchen table was the hub in the household where love, great stories, and many laughs were shared.

Marie was an active Lutheran and loved working with the Ladies Aid and Missionary League. She was a strong supporter in prolife. She quilted with her church group, donating these blankets to the hospital, personal care, World Relief and anyone in the community in need. She made quilt tops all year round with her mom's singer sewing machine late into the night.

She volunteered at Crocus Court and took time to visit many elderly people in the community. She spent years caring for Ed when he was moved to personal care in 2011. He always had a taste of home when she visited him daily. She continued to live on the farm after Ed passed in 2014 until her passing.

Marie had a special bond with her sister Theresa. For most of their lives they lived a mile apart. This closeness led to daily visits and phone calls. She always said, "She was the best sister anyone could ask for!"

This year she embraced modern technology and enjoyed the opportunity to facetime with her children and grandchildren. She loved to see their smiling faces. She made sure whenever her family came to the farm, she always had their favorite foods prepared. Sometimes that could be 10 different dishes.

This past year was a heartbreaking time for her, losing her youngest son Michael unexpectedly. She said there is no greater loss than losing a child and relied on her pillar of faith to get through each and every day.

In 2010, she also experienced a broken heart when she lost her son-in-law Terry Davey.

Marie’s strong faith in her Savior carried her through life. Her easy going, genuine personality made everyone feel welcome and left feeling special. Being a peacemaker, her kind soul easily forgave, and she never held a grudge. She was the calm in the storm and was willing to lend a hand whenever needed. Marie loved to give and felt the love she received back. She always said what a blessed life she had, and her children were her greatest joy. She balanced life and repeatedly said, "There are 4 things needed in life: your Savior, family, food, and good neighbors and friends".

Marie will always be lovingly remembered by her children Marvin (Genevieve Poyser) Mohr of Vernon, BC, Karen Davey (Dana Seppola) of Sherwood Park AB, Leann (Scott) Nattrass of Flin Flon MB, Angela (Stuart) Pollock of Calgary, AB and Daughter in law Amber Mohr of Roblin MB
