James "Jim" co*ckerill Obituary - 2022 (2024)

Jim co*ckerill of Roblin, Manitoba passed away on Thursday, January 20, 2022 at the age of 62 years.

James Fredrick co*ckerill born February 10, 1959 in Roblin and was the third child of Sylvester (Spud) and Cathy (Mary) co*ckerill and only brother to Rosemary, Colleen and Hope. Jim was born the son of a logger and the grandson of a logger. So having a desire for the outdoors and bush came naturally and early in life. As a young boy, Jim was up early going to the bush with his dad to their Kelly Rose sawmill business. His dad began grooming him to be part of the sawmill business until Spud’s untimely death, when Jim was 16. Jim continued to work in the bush either with a skidder or a chainsaw for several years. He could rebuild a chainsaw with both ease and skill.

In 1986 he married Kathy Chase and in 1991 their daughter, Nicole came along and three years later twin boys, Shaylon and Jordon were born. For many years as the children grew, Jim worked in the oil drilling industry in Alberta and in the early 2000’s in Southern Saskatchewan. As events changed with Jim’s marriage he returned to Roblin and began a quieter lifestyle. With Jim’s love of the outdoors and trees, he could be seen planting seeds from pine cones or transplanting spruce seeding to any bush. He said those trees would have never made it in the ditch. He must have transplanted hundreds or thousands of them. Jim knew just about every bird species in the Duck Mountains. He had a pet co*ckatiel for several years until it passed one Christmas Eve.Shortly after that three budgies came to live with him and became his new buddies and company.

Jim had close friends and he could be seen helping them, family or complete strangers in need, asking for nothing in return. From fixing a flat tire, taking a friend to dialysis, or giving away a pair of gloves that were probably better than the ones he was wearing. He would rather go with less in order for someone to have something that day.

Jim was diagnosed with cancer on December 24. He remained at home with the assistance of friends and family until his last few hours. This was his wish as he wanted to be close to them during this time of restrictions. Jim would mask his pain in order to make those near him a little less uncomfortable. On January 20, 2022 Jim passed away at Russell Hospital.

Jim is survived by his mother, Cathy co*ckerill of Roblin; daughter, Nicole (Kyle and grandson, Easton) Paul of Brandon; sons, Shaylon of Brandon and Jordon of Omaha, Nebraska; sisters, Rosemary (Ron) Yakimishyn, Colleen (Daryl) McKinney and Hope (Garth) Livingston and several nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service was held January 28, 2022 at Sneath Strilchuk Funeral Home with Rev. Karen Kuzek officiating. The interment followed at Tummel Deer Park Cemetery. As per Jim’s request his Honorary Urn Bearers were Joey and Rhea Mills, Brant and Leslie Yakimishyn, Scott McKinney, Shawn McKinney, Evan and Heather Zimmer, Kevin Livingston and Jessica Mitchell.

Anyone wishing to make a donation in Jim’s name, may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba – 675 McDermot Avenue, Room 1160 Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.

“God saw you were getting tired and a cure was not to be,

so he put his arms around you and whispered “Come to me.”
